Hate Isn’t Innate: How Communication Can Help Unlearn Prejudice

Hate isn’t something we’re born with. It’s something we learn.

From the earliest stages of life, we come into the world without biases, prejudices, or judgments. Yet, over time, to many are taught harmful beliefs and ideas—often unconsciously absorbed from family, social circles, media, and societal norms.

Understanding that hate is learned opens the door to hope and healing, as it means hate can also be unlearned. Communications professionals, educators, and advocates play a huge role in fostering this unlearning process. Through intentional communication strategies, we can create spaces that promote understanding, empathy, and connection. And maybe one day, we can teach our kids to love.

Here are three foundational steps that communicators can take to help unlearn hate:

1. Storytelling as a Tool for Empathy

Stories allow us to see the world from someone else’s perspective. When we hear the experiences of others—particularly those who differ from us—it becomes harder to hold onto prejudiced views. By sharing diverse voices and stories in our work, we can open the door to empathy and reduce the fear of the unknown that often underlies hate.

2. Challenging Old Stereotypes and Bias

Language matters. Phrases, words, and even the images we share can reinforce harmful bad stereotypes. By being mindful of our messaging and actively countering biased language, we encourage people to question and rethink assumptions. Words matter, and this conscious shift can gradually dismantle the roots of prejudice.

3. Encouraging Open Dialogue

Hate thrives in silence. Facilitating open dialogues where people feel safe to question, learn, and evolve is critical in breaking down walls. Creating environments where diverse opinions are respected allows people to express themselves without fear, making it easier to shift beliefs rooted in hate toward understanding and acceptance.

The journey to a more inclusive society begins with each message we share, each story we amplify, and every opportunity to challenge hate and foster compassion. It reminds us that while hate may be learned, so too can love, empathy, and unity.
