In times of deep struggle or loss, many of us find ourselves asking, “Why did this happen?” And sometimes, no one can offer an answer that means anything.
To me the tale of Job, from the book of the same name, offers a lesson, and one that speaks to anyone who has faced hardship and found no clear answers. Job was a faithful man who, despite leading a righteous life, endured a series of unimaginable losses. His health, his wealth, and even his family were taken from him. Though his friends pleaded with him, no one could address his loss.
Sometimes, there are simply no answers to the "why?" Job's friends, much like the media these last few days, tried to explain reasons for his suffering, suggesting perhaps he had done something to deserve it. But Job remained insistent of his innocence. No, Job had not brought this on himself.
But I would speak with the Almighty; I want to argue with God. But you gloss over falsehoods, you are worthless physicians, every one of you! Oh, that you would be altogether silent; that for you would be wisdom! What are my faults and my sins? My misdeed, my sin make known to me! Why do you hide your face and consider me your enemy?
When God finally speaks to Job, the answer he gives isn’t one that satisfies us. Instead, God reminds Job of the complexity of the universe and the limits of our understanding. All we see here is that bad things happen in a greater context, but that God does not abandon those who have faith.
So, what can we take from this tale? Perhaps the lesson lies in learning to take time to ponder. In a culture that seeks quick answers and explanations, the story of Job invites us to be at peace with the issues we cannot always explain. This doesn’t mean we ignore pain or stop asking questions; rather it suggests that sometimes the greatest strength lies in enduring, in embracing resilience over seeking a quick resolution. It encourages us to find meaning in our responses, in how we support others in their pain, and in the ways we choose to move forward. And, we learn to embrace our own humanity, that no nation is better than any other.
For those who work in communications, understanding and applying Job's lesson can be crucial today. Too often we rush to offer blame and explain away the unexplainable. Whether guiding an organization through crisis, counseling people in moments of distress, or simply listening, recognizing that some answers are out of our reach allows us to offer something more powerful: empathy. It is not always about who failed, but rather, what we do now. In the end, Job’s story suggests that even without all the answers, compassion and resilience carry us through the uncertainties life presents.
